Meet Our Forager

I’m Sam, I’ve always been obsessed with foraging, nature and finding free food (not necessarily foraged food) it started on my Nana’s farm when I was a child, picking blackberries from the hedgerows and helping her to make jam, and play become making “wild soup” with a bucket of water, leaves and flowers. Growing up, I bought a book on mushrooms to copy the pictures for my GCSE art project and since then I’ve been obsessed with mushrooms.

I have always carried on the tradition of gathering fruits in late summer and autumn, when I had my first child I often went out with her strapped to my front and a rucksack full of wild apples, plums and pears on my back and a basket of blackberries and raspberries in my hands. At that time, my recipe repertoire was rather bland, making infused alcohols, jam and pie. So in 2012, my husband bought me a foraging day so I could learn more about wild food… I can honestly say I’ll never forget that day, something inside me turned on and I’ve not been able to turn it off for a single second since.

In 2017 I started running foraging events and it has become my career. It’s the best job in the world, I get to talk about plants, mushrooms and nature all day long! I have a background in teaching, I was a secondary school teacher for 10 years before teaching foraging. I’ve taught a range of different foraging events from introductory courses, in-depth courses where we cook a meal with our finds from the day, wild booze sessions, and I teach coastal, inland and fungi forays.

“I’m at my happiest exploring, cooking, learning new things and taking photos”
