Iconic Brands

David Mellor: David Mellor was a design visionary, a contemporary of Sir Terence Conran, who created a bespoke factory, home and retail space on the outskirts of Hathersage. There is so much more than cutlery here ; David Mellor was a genius who designed much of the street furniture we take for granted today, he even designed the machines he needed to manufacture his cutlery and you can tour the factory on certain days. We cannot recommend this highly enough for any keen cook, architecture fan or design buff. Children love the tractor and the toilets!!

John Smedley: Here in the middle of Derbyshire we manufacture some of the world’s finest knitwear in Merino Wool, Sea Island Cotton and Cashmere. John Smedley’s is a world famous iconic brand, so we recommend a visit to their Factory Shop, open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm.

Royal Crown Derby: world famous bone china, manufactured solely in England. An excellent visitor centre with tours, museum and of course, shop.

Denby Pottery: most people will recognise Denby Pottery, and here you’ll find visitor centre, factory tour and plenty of shopping opportunities.

Market Towns

Bakewell: our nearest town and home to the famous pudding. At the church you’ll find England’s largest collection of Viking crosses and carvings.

Ashbourne: a delightful town, renowned for antique and boutique shops, close to the beautiful Dove Valley. Just don’t be there on Shrove Tuesday, or you could wind up in the famous Shrovetide Football Match!

Wirksworth: an ancient Saxon settlement and once a major lead mining centre, Wirksworth is a gorgeous jumble of Georgian houses, and was the setting for George Eliot’s Adam Bede. The town holds an annual arts festival, Wirskworth Arts Festival every September attracting visitors from all over the country. It is also home to the most charming and quirky cinema, Northern Lights Cinema.
