    “Introduction to Bee Keeping and Garden Tour of Baslow Hall” – and special lunch

     Tuesday 1st July 2014

    In association with The Sheffield Honey Company, Jez Daughtry is a British based award winning artisan producer of premium quality local English honey and the finest beeswax products. In Spring 2014, we are delighted to have 12 bee hives in the grounds at Baslow Hall.

    Arrive at 10.30 am for coffee and an interactive presentation with Jez, as he talks about the basics of Bee Keeping, before a tour of the grounds at Baslow Hall with Head Gardener Terry Wilson. Sit down for a 3 course lunch featuring produce from the garden, as well as the honey!

    “Early Evening Garden Tour and Special Guest Lee Bestall” – and dinner

     Thursday 3rd July 2014

    An exclusive evening starting at 5.30pm with coffee and biscuits. Guest speaker landscape designer, Lee Bestall shares his personal journey of creating Yorkshire’s largest residential Feng Shui garden. The principles of Feng Shui (the ancient art of spatial arrangement) are often considered when furnishing buildings, but here the challenge was to apply the same practices to create a beautiful modern garden whilst avoiding the stereotypical far eastern feel.

    Afterwards, our Head Gardener Terry Wilson will give you a guided tour of the extensive gardens at Baslow Hall. Enjoy canapés and Prosecco on the lawn before a 3 course dinner featuring produce from the garden created Rupert and the team.

    Here at Baslow Hall we like to think that we offer you something special, be it one of Rupert Rowley’s wonderful gastronomic experiences or one of our short breaks visiting the sights of Derbyshire. Under the aimiable guidance of Nicholas Merchant we take you in June to the gardens of Chatsworth, the Derby porcelain factory, and a unique church on the edge of a lake .Nicholas does not rush but he does get you “home” in time for a one of Rupert’s unforgettable dinners! Our next holiday is from 23rd to 27th June……..

    Monday 23rd June

    Guests arrive in time for an afternoon cup of tea and homemade biscuits which will be served from 3.30 pm onwards.

    6.00 pm We meet in the Study to meet your fellow guests, over a glass of champagne and for a short introductory talk by your host Nicholas Merchant.

    Tuesday 24th June

    8.30-9.30 am Breakfast.

    9.45 am We depart for the short journey to Chatsworth.

    10.00 am On previous occasions we have devoted our attention to the house and its contents, today under the guidance of the head gardener, Steve Porter, we are to explore the gardens of this magnificent estate which owe so much to the creative genius of Sir Joseph Paxton and his patron the 6th Duke.

    12.30 pm Lunch may be taken at your own convenience in James Paine’s magnificent stable buildings.

    After lunch you have free time to further explore the estate, or visit the house with its mighty collection ranging from Ancient Egypt to the 21st century.

    3.30 pm Depart to return to Baslow Hall, with a call at the Farm Shop, if desired.

    7.30 pm Dinner.

    Wednesday 25th June

    8.30-9.30 am Breakfast.

    9.45 am Depart for visit to the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain works.

    10.45 am Arrive factory for a guided tour of the production line and a visit to the company museum. Derby porcelain is one of the most famous of the English porcelain factories originating from the middle of the 18th century. This was the period of great industrial expansion, the Industrial Revolution, Derby was very much at the centre of this development.

    12.30 pm Lunch

    1.30 pm Leave Derby Porcelain

    2.00 pm Arrive Derby Museum. Continuing the porcelain theme we will see here some 3000 pieces which comprise the museum’s holding of the factory’s output, but also we shall have a talk by the Keeper of Art, Lucy Bamford, on the work of the comparatively unknown artist, Joseph Wright of Derby. A local man who portrayed not only the rising middle class but also scenes of industrial life, never before commemorated in paint.

    4.00 pm Depart Museum.

    5.00 pm Arrive Baslow Hall.

    Free time.

    7.30 pm Dinner

    Thursday 26th June

    8.30-9.30 am Breakfast.

    9.30 am Depart for visit to Calke Abbey.

    10.30 am Calke Abbey; A cause célèbre in the 1980’s, when this baroque mansion was awakened from its slumbers at the death of the last Harpur-Crewe. Now all is preserved as found. Amongst the superabundance of objects on display is a breath-taking, pristine state bed, hung with Chinese silk, never unpacked since its delivery in 1734; itself worth a detour to see.

    11.00 am Special Conservation Tour of specific parts of the house, thereafter guests are free to visit the gardens and the adjacent church.

    1.30 pm Depart for Staunton Harold Church

    1.45 pm Arrive Staunton Harold Church. Here in 1653 Sir Robert Shirley, an ardent royalist, embellished his church with the legend “….(I have) done  the best of things in the worst of times…”. An amazing act of loyalty to his King.

    2.15 pm Depart for Tissington.

    3.15 pm Arrive Tissington Hall. Jacobean Tissington, home of the FitzHerbert family for 500 years, is uniquely sited overlooking the green with the church, stables and cottages nestling close by. Inside are fine paintings, furniture and 18th century Gothick panelling, somewhat surprisingly upstairs is an Arts and Crafts library of generous proportions. Tea available in the Coach House.

    5.00 pm Depart Tissington.

    5.45 pm Arrive Baslow Hall.

    7.30 pm Dinner

    Friday 27th June

    Guests Depart after Breakfast.

    Price from £1120 per person based on two people sharing on a basis of dinner, bed and breakfast, to include transport, entrance fees, three lunches, one tea, tour leader and VAT. For those who have visited Chatsworth before, we offer the option of joining us on Tuesday at a price of £900 per person. All drinks, except as indicated, to be charged extra.
